Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving, start from the town of Neiba, which is the nearest major town to Sierra de Bahoruco. Head southeast on Calle 16 de Agosto towards Carretera Neiba-Pedernales. Continue on this road for about 30 kilometers until you reach the junction with the road leading to Los Patos. Take a left towards Los Patos and follow the signs. After approximately 10 kilometers, you'll enter the Sierra de Bahoruco National Park. Continue to follow the signs to Cerro El Cayucal. The last few kilometers may require a 4x4 vehicle due to rough terrain. Make sure to have a map or GPS as cell service can be spotty in the mountains.

• Public Transportation

  Start your journey in Neiba by taking a local 'carro público' (shared taxi) to Los Patos. These taxis can be found at the main taxi station in Neiba. The fare is usually around 100 DOP. Once you arrive in Los Patos, you may need to hire a local guide or arrange for a 4x4 taxi to take you closer to Cerro El Cayucal, as public transportation does not go directly to the peak. Expect to pay around 500-800 DOP for the taxi ride up to the trailhead. It's advised to negotiate the fare beforehand. Ensure you have the contact information of a local guide who can assist you, as navigating the area can be challenging.

• Hiking

  If you prefer to hike, you can start your trek from the nearest accessible road after reaching the trailhead via car or taxi. The hike to the summit of Cerro El Cayucal can take about 3-4 hours depending on your fitness level. Make sure to wear appropriate hiking gear, including sturdy shoes, and carry water and snacks. The trail can be steep and uneven, so a walking stick can be helpful. It's also recommended to hike with a local guide who knows the area well for safety and navigation.
