Car
If you are traveling by car, head towards the town of Lago Agrio (also known as Nueva Loja). From there, take the E45 road heading northeast towards Cuyabeno. After approximately 40 km, you will reach the junction for the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. Follow the signs towards Tarapoa, which is about 30 km from the junction. Be aware that the road conditions can vary, so a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Once you arrive in Tarapoa, look for signs or ask locals for directions to Tucan Lodge.
Public Transportation
To reach Tucan Lodge via public transportation, take a bus from Quito or another city to Lago Agrio. Buses leave frequently, and the journey takes about 8-10 hours. Upon arriving in Lago Agrio, you can catch a taxi or local bus to Tarapoa. The taxi ride will take about 30-40 minutes and cost around $30-40. Once in Tarapoa, you can arrange for a canoe transfer to Tucan Lodge, which typically costs around $20 per person and takes about 2 hours through the Amazon River.
Canoe Transfer
After reaching Tarapoa, you will need to take a canoe transfer to get to Tucan Lodge. This transfer is essential as the lodge is located deep within the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve. The canoe ride usually lasts about 2 hours and will take you through beautiful waterways, offering a chance to see wildlife along the way. It’s best to arrange this transfer in advance with Tucan Lodge or a local tour operator for a seamless journey.
