If you're driving from Ambato, take the E35 highway south towards Baños. Continue on E35 for approximately 50 km until you reach the town of Penipe. From Penipe, take the road towards the east (signs for Volcán Altar) and follow the road for about 30 km until you reach the Altar area. Be prepared for rough terrain; a 4x4 vehicle is recommended for the last stretch.
