From San Juan, turn onto the road that leads towards the Chimborazo National Park. Follow the signs to 'Refugio Edward Whymper'. The road will become a gravel road as you get closer, so proceed with caution. The journey will take approximately 1.5 to 2 hours from Riobamba, depending on road conditions. There may be a small entry fee to the national park, typically around $10 per vehicle.
Public Transportation
From Riobamba, take a bus from the main bus terminal to San Juan. Buses run frequently and the ride will take about 1 hour. Once in San Juan, you can either hire a taxi or find a local guide who can drive you to the Chimborazo National Park entrance. The cost for a taxi can vary, but expect to pay around $10 to $15 for the ride to the park. After entering the park, you can either hike the remaining distance to the Edward Whymper Refuge or arrange for a guided 4x4 vehicle to take you closer. The total travel time will be around 2 to 3 hours, depending on waiting times and transportation options.
Hiking
If you're an adventurous traveler, you can also hike from the park entrance to the Edward Whymper Refuge. After entering the Chimborazo National Park, follow the marked trails towards the refuge. This hike is challenging and will take approximately 4 to 6 hours depending on your fitness level. Ensure you are well-prepared with appropriate gear, water, and snacks for the journey.
