Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start from the city of Riobamba. Take the E40 highway heading south towards Alausí. After approximately 35 km, you will reach the town of Alausí. From Alausí, continue on the E40 until you reach the intersection with the E35 road, then take a right turn onto E35 towards the community of Cunchibamba. Follow the signs for Volcan Altar, which is located approximately 25 km from this junction. Keep in mind that the last part of the road may be unpaved, so a vehicle with good clearance is recommended. Parking is available at the base of the volcano, and it is advisable to arrive early in the morning to avoid crowds.

• Public Transportation

  For those using public transportation, take a bus from Riobamba to Alausí. Buses leave frequently from the main terminal in Riobamba and the journey takes about 1 hour. Once in Alausí, you can take a local taxi or a shared taxi to Cunchibamba, which is the closest community to Volcan Altar. This taxi ride will cost approximately $10-$15 and takes about 30 minutes. From Cunchibamba, you will need to hike the remaining distance to the base of Volcan Altar, which is about 5 km. Ensure you have proper hiking gear, as the terrain can be rugged.

• Hiking

  If you are adventurous and prefer to hike, you can start your hike from the village of Cunchibamba. The hike to Volcan Altar is approximately 5 km and can take 1.5 to 2 hours depending on your fitness level. The trail is well marked, but it can be steep and challenging in some sections. It is recommended to start early in the morning to enjoy the cooler temperatures and to bring plenty of water and snacks. Make sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring warm clothing, as temperatures can drop significantly at higher elevations.
