Car
If you're traveling by car, start from Riobamba, the nearest major city. Head south on the E35 highway towards Ambato, and watch for signs leading to Chimborazo National Park. After about 30 kilometers, you will reach the entrance to the park. Pay the entrance fee, which is approximately $10 per person. Continue driving along the main road, following signs toward the Carrel Refuge. The road is well-marked, but be prepared for steep and winding sections. The Carrel Refuge is located at G5F3+VMW, Chuquipogyo. You will find parking available near the refuge.
Public Transportation
For those using public transportation, take a bus from Riobamba to the town of San Juan. Buses frequently depart from the main terminal and cost around $1.50. Once in San Juan, hire a local taxi or arrange for a shared ride to the Chimborazo National Park entrance. This taxi ride will cost approximately $15-20. After entering the park, you can either walk or hire a local guide with a vehicle to take you to Carrel Refuge. Make sure to negotiate the fare beforehand, as prices may vary.
Hiking
If you prefer an adventurous approach, consider hiking from the park entrance to Carrel Refuge. This is only recommended for experienced hikers. From the entrance, follow the marked trails leading up to the refuge, which is about 6-7 kilometers away and can take 2-3 hours of steep hiking. Ensure you have sufficient water, snacks, and proper footwear. Always check the weather conditions before setting off.
