Getting There

• Car

  If you are driving to Cañón Rojo, start from the main entrance of Cotopaxi National Park, located on the Panamerican Highway (E35). Follow the signs to Cotopaxi National Park. Once inside the park, continue on the main road until you reach the parking area near the Limpiopungo Lagoon. From the lagoon, look for the sign that indicates the trail to Cañón Rojo. Park your car and start your hike along the marked trail. The hike to Cañón Rojo is approximately 2 kilometers and takes about 30-45 minutes. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots and carry sufficient water and snacks, as there are no facilities along the trail.

• Public Transportation

  For those relying on public transport, take a bus from Quito to Latacunga. Once in Latacunga, transfer to a local bus heading to Cotopaxi National Park. Inform the bus driver that you wish to visit Cañón Rojo. The bus will drop you off at the entrance of the park. From there, you will need to walk to the parking area near Limpiopungo Lagoon, which is about 3 kilometers from the entrance. Look for the marked trail leading to Cañón Rojo, which is approximately 2 kilometers from the lagoon. The total walking distance from the park entrance is about 5 kilometers.
