Car
If you are driving, start from Latacunga, the nearest major city. Take the Pan-American Highway (E35) heading north. Follow the signs for Cotopaxi National Park. After approximately 30 minutes of driving, you will reach the entrance of the park. There is a small entrance fee of about $10 per vehicle that you will need to pay. Once inside the park, follow the main road towards the parking area near the base of Volcan Cotopaxi.
Public Transportation
For public transportation, take a bus from Latacunga to the Cotopaxi National Park. Look for buses labeled 'Cotopaxi' or 'Sigchos' at the Latacunga bus terminal. The journey takes about 1 hour and costs around $2. Once you arrive at the park entrance, you may need to hire a local taxi or shuttle to take you closer to the base of Volcan Cotopaxi, which can cost approximately $10-$15.
Hiking
Once you arrive at the parking area near Volcan Cotopaxi, prepare for a hike if you wish to get closer to the volcano. The hike to the refuge (Jose Rivas Refuge) takes about 1-2 hours depending on your pace. Make sure you have appropriate gear, as the weather can change rapidly. It is advisable to check the weather and park hours before starting your hike, as the park opens at 8 AM and closes at 2 PM.
