Discover more about Zoorefugio Tarqui

Zoorefugio Tarqui, established in 2008, is more than just a zoo; it's a sanctuary dedicated to preserving Ecuador's Amazonian wildlife. Located in the Tarqui parish of Puyo, Pastaza, Ecuador, the refuge houses over 400 animals representing more than 40 species. Many of these animals have been rescued from illegal wildlife trafficking, while others have been sent from other rescue centers or seized by the Ministry of Environment and the Environmental Police. The refuge aims to rehabilitate animals and, when possible, reintroduce them to their natural habitat. However, many animals have lost the skills necessary to survive in the wild and remain under the refuge's care. Zoorefugio Tarqui's work is achieved through education, recreation, and research. The refuge also works to increase awareness of Ecuador's threatened biodiversity and the importance of wildlife conservation. Visitors can observe a variety of mammals, including primates, felines, and tapirs. Bird species include parrots and birds of prey, while reptiles include alligators, tortoises, and snakes. The animals reside in enclosures with ample vegetation. In addition to animal exhibits, Zoorefugio Tarqui offers amenities such as a bar and grill, and a swimming pool.
