The Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción, also known as the New Cathedral of Cuenca, is a magnificent architectural landmark located in the heart of Cuenca, Ecuador. Situated in front of Parque Calderón, its iconic blue domes dominate the city's skyline, making it a must-see destination for tourists and locals alike.Construction of the cathedral began in 1885 and continued for nearly a century, finally concluding in 1975. The vision for the cathedral came from German architect Juan Bautista Stiehle, who blended Romanesque Revival, Neo-Gothic, Baroque Revival, and Byzantine Revival styles. The cathedral's facade is crafted from alabaster and local marble, while the interior features pink marble floors imported from Carrara, Italy. Stained glass windows, created by Spanish artist Guillermo Larrazábal, add to the interior's beauty. The cathedral's design was inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The towers, though shorter than planned due to a miscalculation, do not detract from the overall grandeur. The cathedral has a capacity of 8,000 people and a crypt that houses hundreds of niches and the tombs of four bishops. Visitors can explore the crypt and ascend 143 steps to reach a terrace that provides a unique perspective of the city.
