Hiking
The final approach to Laguna Amarilla involves a moderate to strenuous hike, typically starting from the village of Candelaria, about 20km from Riobamba. From Candelaria, the trail leads through the Collantes plain and ascends towards the rim of the basin containing Laguna Amarilla. The hike to Laguna Amarilla typically takes 2-3 days round trip. The entrance fee for Sangay National Park is $10 USD per person, valid for two weeks. Camping is permitted in the park for an additional fee of approximately $3 USD per person per night. Alternatively, lodging is available at the Refugio Collanes for around $12 USD per person per night. Be prepared for muddy conditions, especially after rainfall, and wear appropriate hiking boots. It is also advisable to bring gaiters or rubber boots. The weather in the highlands can be unpredictable, so pack layers of clothing, including thermal wear and a waterproof jacket. Food and water should also be carried, as there are limited facilities along the trail.
