Old Cathedral of Cuenca: A Colonial Gem

The Old Cathedral of Cuenca, or Iglesia del Sagrario, stands as a significant historical and architectural landmark in the heart of Cuenca, Ecuador. Construction began in 1557, shortly after the Spanish founding of the city, with stones sourced from the Inca ruins of Tomebamba. During the colonial era, it served as the main place of worship for the Spanish population, while the indigenous people were excluded. The cathedral's architecture reflects a colonial basilica style, featuring three naves and a central altar. Inside, visitors can admire original frescoes from the late 16th century and murals from the early 20th century. A unique bellows organ, installed in 1739, is a notable feature, though it is no longer in service. The museum displays sculptures by Miguel Vélez and Gaspar Sangurima, as well as paintings by Daniel Alvarado and Nicolás Henríquez. A glass window in the floor allows visitors to view the catacombs below, where skulls and bones are arranged. In 1787, the church's status was elevated to a cathedral with the establishment of the bishopric in Cuenca. However, with the completion of the New Cathedral in 1880, the Old Cathedral ceased regular religious services. It underwent significant restoration starting in 1999 and was transformed into a museum. The cathedral is also remembered for its use by the French Geodesic Expedition in 1739, who used its spire as a reference point to establish the arc of the earth. Today, the Old Cathedral hosts concerts and cultural events, adding to Cuenca's vibrant cultural scene.
