Discover more about Parque Nacional Cajas

Parque Nacional Cajas, a protected area of over 28,000 hectares, offers a stunning escape into Ecuador's Andean highlands. Located approximately 30 km west of Cuenca, the park's elevation ranges from 3,100m to 4,450m, creating a unique landscape reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands with its rocky peaks and serene lakes. The park's name, "Cajas," is believed to originate from the Quichua words "cassa" (gateway to the snowy mountains) or "caxa" (cold), reflecting its historical significance as a passage between the coastal and Andean regions. Evidence suggests that roads and trading routes existed here since pre-Inca times, later developed by the Incas. Today, 28 archeological sites within the park stand as testaments to its rich past. The landscape was sculpted by ancient glacial activity, resulting in U-shaped valleys, hills, moraines, and numerous glacial lakes. The park boasts a network of 786 lakes, lagoons, and ponds interconnected by clear streams. The páramo ecosystem acts as a sponge, absorbing and slowly releasing water, making Cajas a crucial water source for the region. Visitors can explore diverse hiking trails, ranging from short nature walks to multi-day treks. Popular trails include the Laguna Toreadora loop and the challenging climb to Cerro San Luis, offering panoramic views. Birdwatchers will delight in the park's 157 bird species, including the majestic Andean Condor and the Giant Hummingbird. Be prepared for unpredictable weather, with average temperatures around 5°C and the possibility of sun, wind, and rain in a single day. Acclimatize to the altitude before embarking on strenuous hikes, and bring appropriate gear, including warm layers and rain protection.
