Discover more about amaZOOnico

Located in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon near Tena, amaZOOnico is more than just an animal refuge; it's a sanctuary with a mission. Founded in 1993 by a Swiss-Quichua couple, Angelika Raimann and Remigio Canelos, along with Christine von Steiger, the center aims to protect the Amazon's fauna by taking in animals confiscated from the illegal wildlife trade. The center rehabilitates and cares for animals, including macaws, monkeys, toucans, and jagarundis. Some animals, due to the severity of their physical or behavioral issues, cannot be released back into the wild and find permanent residence at amaZOOnico. Others, after rehabilitation, are reintroduced into their natural habitats within the nearby Selva Viva reserve. Visitors to amaZOOnico can take guided tours led by knowledgeable volunteers, who share the stories of the animals and educate about the threats of wildlife trafficking. The center relies on visitor contributions and donations to sustain its operations, as it receives no governmental or corporate funding. A visit here offers a unique opportunity to witness the Amazon's biodiversity up close while supporting a crucial conservation effort. The center also works closely with local Kichwa communities, purchasing fruits for the animals and handicrafts for the gift shop from them, promoting environmental awareness through activities with schools and communities.
