Independence Square, also known as Plaza Grande, is the main square of Quito, Ecuador, steeped in history and surrounded by significant colonial buildings. It's a vibrant gathering place for locals and tourists alike, featuring the Independence Monument and beautifully maintained gardens.

Walking
Independence Square is located in the heart of Quito's historic center and is easily accessible on foot from nearby points of interest. From the Metropolitan Cathedral, walk east along Calle Espejo until you reach the square. From the Carondelet Palace, simply exit onto the square. The square is pedestrian-only, making it easy to navigate and enjoy the surroundings.
Public Transport
To reach Independence Square by public transport, use the Quito Metro or the Trolebús. The 'San Francisco' station on the Quito Metro is a short walk from the square. Alternatively, take the Trolebús to a stop near the Old Town, such as Plaza del Teatro or Plaza Santo Domingo, and walk a few blocks to the square. The Trolebús fare is $0.35. Make sure to have small bills or change, as operators may not be able to change larger bills.
Taxi/Ride-Share
Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are readily available in Quito. A short taxi ride within the city center typically costs between $1.50 and $3. Be sure the driver uses the taximeter, or agree on a fare beforehand. From the airport, a taxi to the city center is a fixed rate of around $25-$27. Keep in mind that fares may be higher at night or on public holidays.
