Discover more about Zoológico de Quito

The Zoológico de Quito, also known as the Guayllabamba Zoo, is located in the Guayllabamba parish, northeast of Quito. It was established on August 18, 1997, and is managed by the Fundación Zoológica del Ecuador, a non-profit organization. The zoo spans 12 hectares and houses approximately 508 animals from 103 species. The zoo primarily exhibits Ecuador's native fauna, including Andean condors, spectacled bears, tapirs, jaguars, Galapagos giant tortoises, monkeys, and various bird species. While the zoo focuses on native Ecuadorian species, it also houses animals from other countries and continents. The Zoológico de Quito plays a crucial role in wildlife conservation programs in Ecuador, rescuing animals and working towards their rehabilitation and potential reintroduction into their natural habitats. Many animals have been rescued from trafficking or harmful living conditions and can no longer return to the wild due to physical or psychological trauma. Visitors can explore diverse exhibits, including the Puddle of the Frogs, the Marsupial section, the Night Animal House, and the Andean and Dry Forest trails. The zoo also offers interactive exhibits and educational programs for all ages. The irregular terrain with slopes and hills enhances the experience and allows for better distribution of animal habitats.
