If you're driving, start from the city of Ambato. Take the E35 highway heading south towards Riobamba. After approximately 50 kilometers, you will reach the town of Cahuachi. From there, turn left onto the E40 highway towards Alausí. Continue on the E40 for about 30 kilometers until you reach the town of Guamote. From Guamote, take the road leading to the Volcan Altar area. Follow the signs leading to the park entrance. Be aware that the last segment may involve unpaved roads; a 4x4 vehicle is recommended. Parking is available near the trailhead, but check for any parking fees.
Public Transportation
From Ambato, you can take a bus to Riobamba, which operates frequently and costs around $2-3 USD. Once in Riobamba, transfer to a bus heading to Alausí. This segment should cost about $1-2 USD. From Alausí, take a local bus or taxi to Guamote, which should cost around $1 USD. In Guamote, you can either take a taxi or find a local bus heading towards the Volcan Altar area. Make sure to confirm with the driver that they are going to the park entrance. The total trip duration could take around 3-4 hours, depending on connections and waiting times. Hiking
After reaching the park entrance by car or public transport, you will need to hike to reach the summit of Volcan Altar. The trailhead is well marked, but be prepared for a challenging hike. The trek can take around 4-6 hours depending on your fitness level. Make sure to carry enough water, snacks, and appropriate hiking gear. There may be a small entrance fee to access the park, typically around $1-5 USD.
