Walking
The most common approach to Laguna Amarilla is via a multi-day hike from the village of Candelaria, located approximately 22km northeast of Riobamba. From Candelaria, the trail ascends through the Collanes Valley, gradually climbing towards the crater rim. The hike to the refuge near the base of El Altar typically takes 5-7 hours on foot or 3 hours on horseback. Horses can be rented in Candelaria for approximately $10 per person, plus $10 per guide (one guide per three people is recommended). From the refuge, the final ascent to Laguna Amarilla takes another 2 hours. The trail can be muddy and challenging, so sturdy hiking boots are essential. Park entrance fee: $10 USD (valid for two weeks in all sectors of Sangay National Park).
