The Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepción, or New Cathedral, stands as a testament to Cuenca's rich history and architectural grandeur. Construction began in 1885, initiated by Bishop Remigio Estévez de Toral, and spanned nearly a century, with completion in 1975. The cathedral's design, conceived by German architect Juan Bautista Stiehle, blends Romanesque Revival, Neo-Gothic, and Renaissance styles, drawing inspiration from the Basilica of St. Peter in Rome.The cathedral's most iconic features are its three giant domes, covered in striking blue and white glazed tiles imported from Czechia, which have become a symbol of the city. The facade is crafted from alabaster and local marble, while the interior boasts pink marble flooring from Carrara, Italy. Inside, visitors are greeted by intricate altars, vibrant stained glass windows created by Spanish artist Guillermo Larrazábal, and soaring arches that create a sense of awe.
