The Lighthouse of Alexandria, also known as the Pharos of Alexandria, is a remarkable ancient structure that once guided sailors safely into the bustling harbor of Alexandria, Egypt. Constructed in the 3rd century BC, it was one of the tallest man-made structures of its time, standing approximately 100 meters high. This architectural marvel was built on the small island of Pharos and served not only as a beacon but also as a symbol of the city’s wealth and power. Its innovative design included three tiers: a square base, a middle octagonal section, and a circular top, crowned with a statue of Zeus or Poseidon, depending on which account you believe. Today, though the lighthouse no longer stands, its legacy endures. The site is a popular destination for tourists, offering spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the city of Alexandria. Visitors can walk along the shores and imagine the grandeur of the ancient structure that once marked the entrance to one of the most important ports of the ancient world. Additionally, the nearby archaeological site contains remnants of the lighthouse's foundation and other ancient ruins, providing a glimpse into the past. As you explore the area, don't miss the opportunity to delve into the rich history of Alexandria, a city that has been a melting pot of cultures and ideas for millennia.
