Discover more about Alexandria National Museum

The Alexandria National Museum, inaugurated in 2003, is located in a beautifully restored Italianate mansion that once served as the United States consulate. The building itself dates back to 1926 and was a social hub for Alexandria's upper class. The museum's collection comprises approximately 1,800 artifacts that narrate the history of Alexandria and Egypt across different periods. The exhibits are spread over three floors, each dedicated to a specific era. The basement showcases Pharaonic artifacts, including mummies displayed in a recreated funerary chamber. The first floor focuses on the Graeco-Roman period, featuring canopic jars and relics from Heraklion and Canopus. The top floor covers the Coptic, Islamic, and modern ages, with displays of Ottoman weaponry and jewelry. Visitors can explore a diverse range of artifacts, including statues of Alexander the Great, Ptolemy VI, and Mark Antony, as well as objects recovered from underwater ruins in the city's harbor. The museum also features a collection of coins, weaponry, homewares, religious iconography, sarcophagi, and textiles. The building also features a lecture hall and an open-air theatre. Each showroom is painted in a color that suits the age it represents.
