Discover more about سور اسكندرية القديم

The ancient walls of Alexandria, initially constructed during the reign of Ptolemy I (305-284 BC), served as a crucial defensive structure for the city. These walls, which stretched between 10 to 15 kilometers, were built using stones from the Mex quarries. The Romans further fortified the walls, and they underwent restoration during the Islamic era. Comprising a double-layered structure, the outer wall stood 10 meters high, while the inner wall was taller and thicker. Towers and fortresses punctuated the wall's length, providing enhanced protection. Historical accounts detail the existence of several gates, including the Gate of the Sea, Rosetta Gate, Sidra Gate, and the Cemetery Gate. Today, sections of the wall remain as برج (towers) and partial structures, primarily located in the southeastern part of Alexandria Stadium and within the grounds of the Shallalat Gardens. These remnants offer a tangible link to Alexandria's storied past, showcasing the architectural and strategic significance of the ancient fortifications. Despite significant portions being demolished over time, the remaining sections continue to evoke the grandeur and resilience of ancient Alexandria.
