Discover more about temple Khnum 2

The Temple of Khnum, located on the southern tip of Elephantine Island in Aswan, is an ancient site with a history stretching back to around 3000 BC. The largest structure on the island is the partially reconstructed Temple of Khnum, originally built to honor Khnum, the god of inundation, during the Old Kingdom. The temple was later extensively rebuilt in Ptolemaic times. Khnum was an important god in Ancient Egypt, though he did not reach the status of a national god. He was considered the manufacturer of mankind, creating humans and their souls from mud on a potter's wheel. On Elephantine Island, Khnum formed a sacred trinity with the goddesses Satis and Anuket. The temple's foundations were constructed during the 18th Dynasty by Tuthmosis III. Today, visitors can explore the ruins of the Temple of Khnum and other archaeological sites on Elephantine Island, including the Temple of Satet and possibly Aswan's oldest Nilometer. The Aswan Museum, located on the island, houses a collection of artifacts and relics found on the island, providing insights into its history from prehistoric times to the Islamic era.
