Bab al-Futuh, meaning the Gate of Conquest, is a historic gate located at the northern end of Al-Muizz Street in Cairo. Constructed in 1087 by vizier Badr al-Gamali during the Fatimid era, it's one of the few remaining gates from the original city walls. The gate was initially named Bab al-Iqbal, meaning 'Gate of Prosperity', but it became known as Bab al-Futuh, the name of an older gate it replaced.The gate's architecture is a remarkable example of Fatimid military design. It features two rounded towers flanking the entrance, a design choice that offered superior strength compared to square towers. These towers incorporate defense chambers with arrow slits and shafts used to pour boiling water or oil on attackers. The archway is adorned with a carved lattice pattern, showcasing flowers and geometric motifs. Above the arch are decorated brackets supporting a stone shelf.Inside the gate, a vaulted room once served as a gathering place for troops. Climbing the stairs to the top of the wall reveals finely joined vaults and carved reliefs, including reused blocks from Pharaonic complexes at Memphis. Today, Bab al-Futuh stands as a captivating landmark, offering visitors a glimpse into Cairo's medieval past.
