Discover more about El-Kab Tombs

The El-Kab Tombs, located 15 km north of Edfu and 80 km south of Luxor on the east bank of the Nile, are a captivating archaeological site that transports visitors back to ancient Egypt. El-Kab, known in ancient times as Nekheb, was a significant religious and political center dedicated to the vulture goddess Nekhbet. These rock-cut tombs primarily served as burial places for nobles and military leaders from the New Kingdom (1550–1069 BC), showcasing their afterlife beliefs. The necropolis contains important tombs that provide insights into the early history of the Eighteenth Dynasty and the reunification of Egypt. Among the notable tombs are those of Sobeknakht II, Ahmose son of Ebana, and Setau. The walls are adorned with detailed hieroglyphics depicting scenes of daily life, religious rituals, and the journey to the afterlife. El-Kab also features remains of temples dating from the Early Dynastic period (3100–2686 BC) to the Ptolemaic Kingdom (332–30 BC), as well as parts of a Coptic monastery. The walled settlement of Nekheb was one of the first urban centers and briefly became the capital of the third nome of Upper Egypt during the New Kingdom.
