    Discover more about Karnak

Karnak Temple isn't a single temple, but a sprawling complex of temples, chapels, pylons, and other buildings. Covering over 200 acres, its construction spanned over 2,000 years, reflecting the changing empire and evolving religious beliefs of Ancient Egypt. The complex was a significant religious center and also served as a treasury, administrative hub, and palace for the New Kingdom pharaohs. At the heart of Karnak lies the Great Temple of Amun, built around 1630 BCE. Subsequent pharaohs, including Hatshepsut, Tutankhamun and Ramesses II, expanded and embellished the temple. One of the most impressive features is the Great Hypostyle Hall, a forest of 134 towering columns covering an area of 54,000 square feet. The columns are adorned with intricate carvings depicting scenes from Egyptian mythology and the pharaohs' victories.Other notable structures within the complex include the Precinct of Mut, dedicated to the Earth and creation deity, and the Festival Hall of Thutmose III, which served as a monument to living spirit. Karnak also features a sacred lake, obelisks, and the Avenue of Sphinxes, which connects Karnak to Luxor Temple. The site is a testament to the grandeur and architectural prowess of the ancient Egyptians, offering a glimpse into their religious beliefs and daily life.
