Discover more about Bird watching

Qarun Lake, nestled in the Faiyum Depression, is one of the oldest natural lakes in the world, boasting a rich history and ecological significance. Once known as Lake Moeris, it played a vital role in ancient Egyptian irrigation systems. Today, it persists as a smaller saltwater lake, attracting birdwatchers from around the globe. The lake is a crucial stop for migratory birds traveling between Europe, Asia, and Africa, with over 200 species sighted. During winter months, the lake comes alive with thousands of birds, including flamingos, herons, ducks, and waders. Lucky visitors might spot the white pelican or other rare species. While birdwatching is the main draw, the area also offers stunning desert landscapes and unique geological formations. The northern shore, around Gebal Qatrani, is a treasure trove of primate and mammal fossils, while the southern shore provides panoramic views. Though swimming is not recommended due to salinity and pollution, boat trips offer a chance to experience the lake's beauty.
