Discover more about Wadi El Rayan

Wadi El Rayan, located in the Fayoum Governorate approximately 65 kilometers southwest of Faiyum city, is a natural reserve spanning 1,759 square kilometers. Established in 1989, it is known for its unique combination of desert landscapes and aquatic environments. The valley features two large, man-made lakes, created in the 1970s to manage agricultural drainage from the Fayoum Oasis, which have since become vital habitats for various species. The upper and lower lakes cover 113 square kilometers and are connected by Egypt's only waterfalls, formed as water flows between the lakes. While not towering, these falls offer a refreshing spectacle in the desert. The surrounding area includes extensive sand dunes, reaching up to 50 meters in some places, as well as natural sulfur springs. These diverse landscapes support a variety of wildlife, including the endangered slender-horned gazelle, various bird species, and desert foxes. Birdwatching is particularly rewarding during migratory seasons. Wadi El Rayan is also home to Wadi Al-Hitan, or Valley of the Whales, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This area contains fossil remains of ancient whales, providing insights into the region's prehistoric past. Visitors can explore the fossils and learn about the area's geological history. Other activities in Wadi El Rayan include swimming, boating, hiking, sandboarding, and camping. The park offers a visitor center and some camping spots.
