5 Days Exploring Northern Ethiopia

We booked a 5-day tour through northern Ethiopia with Danakil Depression Tours, visiting Bahir Dar, Gondar, the Simien Mountains and Lalibela. We knew beforehand that trying to see all these places in five days would make the trip quite busy, but we wanted to see as much as possible during our time in Ethiopia. We started in Bahir Dar and spent time around Lake Tana and the historic sites in the area. It was a nice introduction to the region, and we enjoyed seeing a quieter side of Ethiopia before moving on. From Bahir Dar we continued to Gondar. The old royal compound and historic churches were interesting, and our guide gave us background about the history instead of just taking us from one place to another. We enjoyed having the explanations because otherwise it would have been difficult to understand the importance of some of the sites. The Simien Mountains were probably the biggest surprise of the trip. The scenery is beautiful, with huge valleys and dramatic cliffs. We also saw gelada monkeys, which was something we were really hoping to see. The weather was a little unpredictable while we were there, but it actually made the mountains look even more dramatic at times. Then we headed to Lalibela. Seeing the rock-hewn churches in person was very different from seeing them in pictures. Walking between the churches and seeing how they were carved into the rock was one of the moments that really stayed with us. We also appreciated having a guide who could explain the history and religious significance of the sites. Because we were covering four destinations in only five days, there was quite a lot of driving and some early starts. It was definitely tiring at times, but we expected that when we chose this itinerary. The advantage was that we got to experience several very different parts of northern Ethiopia in one trip. One thing that made the trip easier was Mickey, the owner of Danakil Depression Tours. From the first time we contacted him, he was very fast with his replies. Whenever we had a question, we usually didn't have to wait long for an answer. More importantly, he continued to follow up with us throughout the tour, rather than just arranging everything and leaving us on our own. There were a few small changes and practical things to sort out along the way, as can happen on a busy trip, but it was reassuring knowing that we could contact Mickey and get a quick response. Overall, it was a busy but rewarding five days. Bahir Dar, Gondar, the Simien Mountains and Lalibela each offered something completely different, from Lake Tana and Ethiopian history to mountain landscapes and the incredible churches of Lalibela. A big thank you to Mickey and the team for organizing everything and, especially, for the quick communication and follow-up before and during our trip. That personal attention made a real difference to our experience.

Day Trip Simien Mountains National Park

Great Day in the Simien Mountains

We spent one day visiting Simien Mountains National Park with Simien Mountain Trekking and Tours, and we really enjoyed the experience. From the beginning, everything was organized well. The communication was easy, the pickup was on time, and the whole day went smoothly. Our guide was friendly and easy to talk to, and he knew the area very well. He gave us information about the mountains, the local people, and the wildlife, but also gave us enough time to simply enjoy the scenery. The Simien Mountains themselves are incredible. The views are even more impressive in person, especially the huge cliffs and valleys. We made several stops at viewpoints and also did some walking, which was a great way to experience the landscape rather than just driving through it. One of our favorite parts of the day was seeing the Gelada monkeys. We were lucky enough to get quite close to them and watch them in their natural environment. It was definitely one of those moments that made the trip special. The roads in the mountains can be quite rough in places, but our driver was careful and experienced, so we always felt safe. We never felt rushed, and the team was flexible when we wanted to stop for photos or spend a little more time at a particular place. What we liked most was that the trip didn't feel overly formal or like we were just being taken from one tourist spot to another. We could ask questions, talk with our guide, and enjoy the day at our own pace. If you are visiting Gondar and have only one day for the Simien Mountains, we would definitely recommend doing this trip. Of course, one day is not enough to see everything in the park, but it gives you a really good taste of the landscape and wildlife.
