5 Days Exploring Northern Ethiopia

We booked a 5-day tour through northern Ethiopia with Danakil Depression Tours, visiting Bahir Dar, Gondar, the Simien Mountains and Lalibela. We knew beforehand that trying to see all these places in five days would make the trip quite busy, but we wanted to see as much as possible during our time in Ethiopia. We started in Bahir Dar and spent time around Lake Tana and the historic sites in the area. It was a nice introduction to the region, and we enjoyed seeing a quieter side of Ethiopia before moving on. From Bahir Dar we continued to Gondar. The old royal compound and historic churches were interesting, and our guide gave us background about the history instead of just taking us from one place to another. We enjoyed having the explanations because otherwise it would have been difficult to understand the importance of some of the sites. The Simien Mountains were probably the biggest surprise of the trip. The scenery is beautiful, with huge valleys and dramatic cliffs. We also saw gelada monkeys, which was something we were really hoping to see. The weather was a little unpredictable while we were there, but it actually made the mountains look even more dramatic at times. Then we headed to Lalibela. Seeing the rock-hewn churches in person was very different from seeing them in pictures. Walking between the churches and seeing how they were carved into the rock was one of the moments that really stayed with us. We also appreciated having a guide who could explain the history and religious significance of the sites. Because we were covering four destinations in only five days, there was quite a lot of driving and some early starts. It was definitely tiring at times, but we expected that when we chose this itinerary. The advantage was that we got to experience several very different parts of northern Ethiopia in one trip. One thing that made the trip easier was Mickey, the owner of Danakil Depression Tours. From the first time we contacted him, he was very fast with his replies. Whenever we had a question, we usually didn't have to wait long for an answer. More importantly, he continued to follow up with us throughout the tour, rather than just arranging everything and leaving us on our own. There were a few small changes and practical things to sort out along the way, as can happen on a busy trip, but it was reassuring knowing that we could contact Mickey and get a quick response. Overall, it was a busy but rewarding five days. Bahir Dar, Gondar, the Simien Mountains and Lalibela each offered something completely different, from Lake Tana and Ethiopian history to mountain landscapes and the incredible churches of Lalibela. A big thank you to Mickey and the team for organizing everything and, especially, for the quick communication and follow-up before and during our trip. 12 Days Exploring Northern Ethiopia – A Great Group Experience

Our group of 10 people spent 12 days traveling through northern Ethiopia with Danakil Depression Tours, visiting Bahir Dar and Lake Tana, the Blue Nile Falls, Gondar, the Simien Mountains, Lalibela, the rock-hewn churches of Tigray, and finally the Danakil Depression. Traveling as a group of 10 for 12 days is not always easy, especially with the amount of driving and different places we wanted to visit, but everything was well organized and the trip went very smoothly overall. We really enjoyed Bahir Dar and Lake Tana, especially visiting the monasteries and seeing the scenery around the lake. The Blue Nile Falls were another nice experience. In Gondar, we explored the historic sites and learned more about the history of the Ethiopian emperors. The Simien Mountains were one of the highlights for many of us. The landscapes were spectacular, and seeing the gelada baboons was a memorable part of the visit. Lalibela was another unforgettable stop. Seeing the rock-hewn churches in person was amazing, and our guide gave us plenty of information about their history and religious importance. We also really enjoyed Tigray. The ancient churches, remote locations, and dramatic mountain scenery made this part of the trip feel like a real adventure. Some of the journeys were long, but the places we reached were worth the effort. The final part of our journey was the Danakil Depression. It was completely different from everything else we had seen during the trip. The extreme heat was challenging, but the salt landscapes, Lake Assale, Dallol area, and volcanic scenery made it a very unique experience. A special mention has to go to Mickey, the owner of Danakil Depression Tours. He was involved with our group from the beginning of the planning until the end of the 12 days. With 10 people traveling together, there were naturally many questions and things to coordinate, but Mickey was always available and reliable. Knowing that we could contact him whenever something came up gave us a lot of peace of mind. The guides, drivers, and the rest of the Danakil Depression Tours team were also excellent. They were friendly, patient, and helpful throughout the trip and worked hard to make sure our group was comfortable. After 12 days together, we came away with a lot of great memories and many photos. Ethiopia has an incredible variety of landscapes, history, and culture, and this trip allowed us to experience a little bit of everything.
