Getting there

Car

If you are traveling by car, start from Addis Ababa and take the Bole Road towards the southeast. After approximately 60 kilometers, you will reach the town of Modjo, where you should take the exit for the Addis Ababa-Djibouti Road (A1). Continue on the A1 for about 70 kilometers until you reach the town of Shashemene. From Shashemene, follow the signs to Langano Lake, which is approximately 30 kilometers away. The road is well-paved, but be cautious of occasional potholes and livestock on the road. Once you reach Langano Lake, follow signs to the various resorts and recreational areas along the lake's shore.

Public Transportation

To reach Langano Lake via public transport, first, head to the main bus station in Addis Ababa. Look for buses heading to Shashemene, as they frequently depart throughout the day. The bus ride to Shashemene takes about 3-4 hours and costs approximately 100-150 Ethiopian Birr. Once you arrive in Shashemene, you can catch a minibus or a shared taxi to Langano Lake. The fare for this leg of the journey is around 30-50 Ethiopian Birr, and the trip takes about 30-40 minutes. Make sure to confirm the destination with the driver to ensure you are heading to the correct area of the lake.

Bicycle

For the adventurous traveler, cycling to Langano Lake is also an option. From Addis Ababa, follow the same route towards Modjo and then to Shashemene. The total distance is roughly 150 kilometers, and it can take a full day or more, depending on your cycling speed and stamina. Ensure you have adequate supplies, including water and food, and be prepared for varying road conditions. Once you arrive in Shashemene, you can find local accommodations before heading to Langano Lake.
