Discover more about Eysturoy Tunnel

The Eysturoy Tunnel (Eysturoyartunnilin) is a groundbreaking feat of engineering in the Faroe Islands, connecting the island of Streymoy to Eysturoy. Stretching over 11 kilometers, this subsea tunnel is not only a crucial transportation route but also a unique tourist attraction, boasting the world's first and only underwater roundabout. Opened in December 2020, the Eysturoy Tunnel has dramatically reduced travel times between Tórshavn, the capital, and various points on Eysturoy. What once was a 55-kilometer, 64-minute drive to Runavík/Strendur is now a mere 17 kilometers and 16 minutes. The tunnel also shortens the drive to Klaksvík from 68 minutes to 36 minutes. The highlight of the Eysturoy Tunnel is undoubtedly the underwater roundabout, located 72.6 meters below sea level. This unique construction features artwork by Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson, with illuminated sculptures and light effects creating a mesmerizing experience. The tunnel's walls are color-coded in yellow, green, and light blue, further enhancing the visual journey. Motorists can even tune into a special radio station, FM 97.0, with music composed specifically for the tunnel. The tunnel has three entry points: Hvítanes near Tórshavn on Streymoy, and Saltnes and Strendur on Eysturoy. The construction of the Eysturoy Tunnel represents the largest infrastructure investment ever made in the Faroe Islands, transforming transportation and regional connectivity.
