Discover more about Norðoya Fornminnissavn

Norðoya Fornminnissavn, nestled in Klaksvík, is more than just a museum; it's a portal into the past of the Northern Islands. Founded in 1968, the museum resides within a beautifully preserved merchant house, established in 1838 as a branch of the Danish monopoly trade in Tórshavn. The building itself whispers stories of a bygone era, remaining remarkably untouched since the abolition of the monopoly in 1856. Inside, two spacious exhibition rooms await. The first room unveils a collection of everyday items and tools from centuries past, offering a unique window into the lives of those who once inhabited these islands. Among the notable exhibits is an ancient slate grinding mill, a testament to the resourcefulness of the islanders, which remarkably remained in use until World War II. The walls are adorned with old photographs, capturing the essence and history of the Northern Islands. The second room, known as "The Chemistry Room", provides a glimpse into more recent history. Originally a draper's shop in 1919, it transformed into a chemistry lab from 1932 to 1961. Preserved in its original state, the room features shelves filled with bottles, flasks, and various chemical tools from that period. Adding an artistic touch to the historical ambiance, 17 paintings grace the ceiling beams, with works by local artist Eliesar Joensen, Jens Chr. Guttesen from Tórshavn, and two unsigned pieces. Beyond the museum walls, Norðoya Fornminnissavn extends its reach to several historical properties across the Northern Islands. These include the abandoned village of Fossá, a storage building in Gerðum, and a historic watermill in Kunoy, further enriching the museum's commitment to preserving the region's heritage. A visit to Norðoya Fornminnissavn offers an immersive experience, connecting visitors to the rich history and traditions of the Northern Islands.
