Discover more about Gasadalur

Gasadalur, meaning "Goose Valley," is a captivating village on the western edge of Vágar Island in the Faroe Islands. Until 2004, it was one of the most isolated settlements in the archipelago, accessible only by boat, helicopter, or a demanding hike over a 400-meter-high mountain pass. This isolation contributed to its dwindling population, but the construction of the Gásadalstunnilin tunnel has since transformed the village, making it easily accessible by car and attracting visitors from around the globe. The village offers panoramic views, especially towards the island of Mykines, and is surrounded by impressive mountains, including Árnafjall to the north and Eysturtindur to the east. The primary draw is undoubtedly the Múlafossur Waterfall, which plunges dramatically into the North Atlantic Ocean, creating a stunning visual spectacle. While in Gasadalur, you can explore the walking paths offering different vantage points of the waterfall and the surrounding landscape. During the summer months, you might even spot puffins nesting on the cliffs. The village itself has a café where you can sample local Faroese food. The history of Gasadalur is as compelling as its scenery. Legend says the village was named after a woman named Gæsa from Kirkjubøur who fled to the valley after eating meat during Lent. For this unholy deed, all her property was confiscated. The village also holds historical significance as coffins had to be carried over the mountain to be buried in Bour.
