Gjógv, pronounced 'Jjogv,' is a picturesque village on the northeastern tip of Eysturoy Island in the Faroe Islands. The village is named after a stunning 200-meter-long sea-filled gorge (gjógv in Faroese), which serves as a natural harbor. For centuries, villagers used this gorge as a landing ground for their boats. First mentioned in 1584, Gjógv has a rich history rooted in fishing and the selling of dried and salted fish. Once a bustling fishing village with as many as 13 boats, Gjógv's population peaked around 1945 with 286 residents. Today, it's a tranquil village with a population of just 19. Many of the houses now serve as holiday homes. Despite its small size, Gjógv offers essential services for visitors, including a café, public toilets, and a parking lot. The village is known for its stunning natural scenery, including the gorge itself, the village church dating back to 1929, and a memorial to fishermen lost at sea. Hikes around Gjógv offer views of the highest peaks in the Faroe Islands and the sea stack Búgvin. During the summer, visitors can spot puffins near the gorge.
