Discover more about Viking Sundial

The Viking Sundial, nestled in the heart of Tórshavn on the historic Tinganes peninsula, is more than just a timekeeping device; it's a testament to the Faroe Islands' rich Viking heritage. Tinganes, meaning "parliament jetty" or "parliament point," has been the seat of Faroese government since the Viking Age, with the parliament first meeting here around 825 AD. The sundial serves as a reminder of the ingenuity and seafaring prowess of the Vikings who settled these islands. As you explore the area, take note of the traditional grass-roofed buildings that characterize Faroese architecture. Tinganes is one of the oldest parliamentary meeting places in the world, and the small main street, Gongin, is home to the oldest parts of the city. Many of the houses were built in the 16th and 17th centuries and are still in use today. The peninsula itself divides Tórshavn harbor into two parts, Eystaravág and Vesteravág. While exploring Tinganes, keep an eye out for rock carvings, some of which may date back to the Viking era. These carvings, along with the sundial, offer a tangible link to the island's past and the traditions of the Viking settlers. The Viking Sundial not only marks the passage of time but also invites contemplation on the enduring legacy of the Vikings in the Faroe Islands.
