The Eysturoy Tunnel, or Eysturoyartunnilin, is more than just a means of transportation; it's an experience. Opened in December 2020, this 11-kilometer sub-sea tunnel links the islands of Streymoy and Eysturoy in the Faroe Islands, dramatically reducing travel times between the capital, Tórshavn, and key locations on Eysturoy. The tunnel's highlight is undoubtedly the world's first underwater roundabout, situated beneath the Skálafjørður fjord. This engineering marvel not only facilitates smooth traffic flow but also features an art installation by Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson, creating a visually stunning experience with illuminated figures. The roundabout connects to Strendur and Runavík. Beyond its functional purpose, the Eysturoy Tunnel has become a tourist attraction in its own right. The journey offers a unique perspective on the Faroes' dramatic natural beauty, and the underwater roundabout provides an unforgettable photo opportunity.
