Discover more about Gasadalur

Gasadalur, nestled on the western edge of Vágar Island, offers a mesmerizing blend of natural beauty and historical isolation. The village is surrounded by Vágar's highest mountains, Árnafjall and Eysturtindur, providing panoramic views, especially towards the isle of Mykines. The iconic Múlafossur Waterfall is the star attraction, cascading powerfully off the cliffs and into the ocean below. Until 2004, Gasadalur was one of the most isolated settlements in the Faroe Islands. Before the construction of the Gásadalstunnilin tunnel, residents relied on a challenging hike over a 400-meter-high mountain to reach neighboring villages. This isolation led to a decline in population, with only a handful of residents remaining. The postman famously traversed the mountain three times a week to deliver mail. The tunnel's completion marked a turning point, connecting Gasadalur to the rest of Vágar Island by road. Today, visitors can easily drive or take a bus to experience the village's charm. Despite improved accessibility, Gasadalur has retained its unique atmosphere and unspoiled character. Visitors can explore the village, enjoy local Faroese food at Gásadalsgarður café, and visit a souvenir shop. For those seeking a more adventurous route, the original path over the mountain remains a rewarding hike, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The name Gasadalur, meaning "Goose Valley," may derive from the wild geese that have long frequented the area. Another story suggests the village is named after a woman named Gæsa from Kirkjubøur, who fled to the valley after being punished for eating meat during Lent.
