Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Tórshavn, take the free bus route 5 (weekdays) or route 7 (Saturdays) to Kirkjubøur. These buses are free of charge. Check the Tórshavn municipality website for the most up-to-date bus schedules. From the bus stop in Kirkjubøur, it is a short walk to Roykstovan.

  • Driving

    From Tórshavn, follow Route 12 south for approximately 15 minutes (11 kilometers). The turnoff for Kirkjubøur is well-marked. Parking is available near the bus stop. From the parking area, Roykstovan is a short walk away. Parking is free.

  • Walking

    It is possible to hike from Tórshavn to Kirkjubøur. The trail is approximately 6 kilometers long and takes 2-3 hours. Begin at the junction where Landavegur and Velbastaðvegur meet. Follow the path to the river Sandá, then head towards the farm where the trail to Kirkjubøur starts. The path ends at a cattle grid about 50 meters from the nearest houses. From there, walk into the village towards Roykstovan.

For 17 generations, the Patursson family has occupied Kirkjubøargarður, the farmhouse to which Roykstovan belongs. Once part of the bishop's palace, Roykstovan offers a unique window into the lives of the Faroese people throughout the centuries. Explore exhibits highlighting fishing, farming, and family life, and admire the collection of farming and household implements dating back to 1100. The knowledgeable staff can share stories and answer questions, enriching your understanding of Faroese culture. Kirkjubøur itself is the most important historical site in the Faroe Islands. In addition to Roykstovan, visitors can explore the ruins of the Magnus Cathedral and St. Olav's Church.
