Discover more about Norðoya Fornminnissavn

Norðoya Fornminnissavn, established in 1968, is located in Klaksvík and dedicated to preserving the history of the Norðoyar region. The museum is situated in an old merchant house built in 1838 as a branch of the Danish monopoly trade in Tórshavn. The building itself is a historical artifact, remaining untouched since the abolishment of the trade monopoly in 1856. The museum features two exhibition rooms. The first room displays everyday items and tools from past centuries, offering a glimpse into life on the northern islands. Among the exhibits is an ancient slate grinding mill, still used to grind grain during World War II. Old photographs capture the essence and history of the northern isles. The second room, known as “The Chemistry Room”, was originally a draper's shop in 1919, later serving as a chemistry lab from 1932 to 1961. Preserved in its original state, it features shelves filled with bottles, flasks, and chemical tools. The beams of the ceiling are adorned with 17 paintings by local artists. Beyond the main building, the museum owns historical properties across the northern islands, including the abandoned village of Fossá, a storage building in Gerðum, and a historic watermill in Kunoy. The museum is a hub for cultural activities, with knowledgeable staff offering guided tours and recounting the region's history.
