Roykstovan: A Journey into Faroese History
Step back in time at Roykstovan, a historic Faroese farmhouse museum in Kirkjubøur, showcasing centuries of island culture and heritage.
Roykstovan, also known as the reek parlour or smoke room, is a historically significant site located in Kirkjubøur, the cultural heart of the Faroe Islands. Kirkjubøur itself is the southernmost village on the island of Streymoy and a short drive from Tórshavn. Roykstovan is part of the Kirkjubøargarður farmhouse and is believed to date back to the 11th century, making it one of the oldest inhabited wooden houses in Europe. Originally part of the bishop's palace, Roykstovan has been the home of farmers since 1557. The building is constructed from coarsely hewn timber logs smeared in black tar and sits atop a basement of sturdy stone walls. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits that highlight the significance of fishing, farming, and family life in the Faroe Islands. Roykstovan also holds historical importance as the place where Bishop Erlendur wrote the 'Sheep Letter' in 1298, the earliest known document from the Faroes. Today, Roykstovan serves as a museum, offering a cozy and rustic charm to its historic setting.
