Discover more about Eysturoy Tunnel

The Eysturoy Tunnel, known locally as Eysturoyartunnilin, is an impressive feat of engineering in the Faroe Islands. Opened in December 2020, this 11.24-kilometer sub-sea tunnel links Streymoy, where the capital Tórshavn is located, with Eysturoy, the second-largest island in the archipelago. What sets this tunnel apart is the world's first underwater roundabout, located at the heart of the network. The tunnel significantly cuts travel time, reducing the journey from Tórshavn to Runavík/Strendur from 55 km to just 17 km – a drive shortened from 64 minutes to a mere 16. The tunnel also makes it easier to reach the Northern Isles. The underwater roundabout is adorned with a sculpture by Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson, featuring color-changing lights that illuminate steel figures engaged in a traditional Faroese chain dance. Motorists can even tune their radios to 97.0 FM for music composed specifically for the tunnel experience. Driving through the Eysturoy Tunnel is more than just a commute; it's an experience. As you descend beneath the waves, you're enveloped in a unique environment that blends infrastructure with art. The tunnel is open 24/7, making it a reliable link between the islands.
