Discover more about Center of Fiji

The center of Fiji, found on Ovalau Island, provides a unique window into the soul of Fiji, blending historical importance with the tranquility of island life. Ovalau itself is the sixth-largest island in Fiji, part of the Lomaiviti Archipelago. The island, roughly circular, features a rugged, mountainous interior and a coastal ring road. Levuka, Ovalau's main town, served as Fiji's first colonial capital. Established in the 1820s as a whaling port, Levuka attracted European and American settlers, becoming a hub of commercial activity. In 1874, Levuka became the official capital, marking a pivotal moment in Fiji's history as the center of colonial administration. However, the rugged terrain hindered economic growth, leading to the relocation of the capital to Suva in 1883. Today, Levuka is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its well-preserved colonial architecture and historical significance. Visitors can explore the town's charming streets, colonial-era buildings, and historical landmarks, including the Sacred Heart Church, Levuka Public School, and the Ovalau Club. The town offers a tangible connection to Fiji's past, with many buildings remaining largely unchanged since the 19th century. Beyond Levuka, Ovalau offers a glimpse into traditional Fijian life. Coastal villages dot the island, and the interior is home to the unique Lovoni Valley. The island's laid-back atmosphere and friendly locals create an inviting environment for those seeking an authentic Fijian experience.
