Discover more about Kvarkens skärgård

The Kvarken Archipelago, located off the coast of Vaasa, Finland, is a testament to the dynamic forces shaping our planet. This remarkable area, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site since 2006, is renowned for its ongoing land uplift, a result of the Earth's crust rebounding after the last Ice Age. Together with Sweden's High Coast, it forms a joint World Heritage Site where this phenomenon is most evident. Characterized by its flat islands, shallow stony beaches, and rich birdlife, the Kvarken Archipelago presents a landscape unlike any other. The Ice Age left its mark, depositing various moraine formations that contribute to the area's diverse scenery. As the land continues to rise at a rate of approximately 9 mm per year, the archipelago constantly transforms, creating new islands, expanding peninsulas, and evolving lakes. Human activity in the Kvarken Archipelago has historically revolved around fishing, seal hunting, and seafaring. Ancient relics, such as stone labyrinths and compass roses, dot the landscape, offering glimpses into the past. Today, the archipelago welcomes visitors with its nature trails, hiking routes, and opportunities for kayaking and fishing. The World Heritage Gateway provides information and guidance for exploring this unique destination.
