Getting There

  • Bus

    From Kotka, take bus 98V or 98K towards Pyhtää. These buses operate on weekdays and Saturdays during the summer. The final stop in Valkmusa is Simonsaari car park (Vastilantie 886). A ticket covering zones A–B is required for travel between Kotka and Valkmusa. Check digitransit.fi for current timetables and routes. A single ticket costs approximately €3-4.

    Valkmusa National Park is located north of the E18 highway. From Siltakylä in Pyhtää, take road 3562 north. The Simonsaari parking area is located at Vastilantie 886. Parking is free. From Kotka, the drive is approximately 19 km. From Kouvola, it is 42 km, and from Porvoo, it is 76 km.

  • Walking

    From the Simonsaari parking area (Vastilantie 886), the hiking trails start. Follow the marked circular trail of the Western Oasis (Läntinen keidas). This 2.5 km trail includes duckboards across the mires and a nature tower. The trail is easy to moderate and suitable for families.

Valkmusa National Park, located in southeastern Finland, is a haven of pristine mire landscapes and diverse wildlife. Established in 1996, the park covers 17 square kilometers (6.6 sq mi) and showcases over 40 types of mire habitats, an exceptional amount for Southern Finland. These internationally valuable mires, including Munasuo, Valkmusa, Kananiemensuo and Mustanjärvensuo, have largely retained their natural state. Valkmusa offers visitors a chance to experience the tranquility of nature through hiking and birdwatching. The park features a 2.5 km marked circular trail with duckboards, allowing you to traverse the mires and observe the unique flora and fauna. Climb the nature tower for panoramic views of the open landscape and to spot various bird species. Valkmusa is known for its rich birdlife, including wetland species like redshank and pochard, as well as northern species like whimbrel. Ospreys and cranes also thrive in the park. The park is also home to several rare and threatened butterfly and moth species, including the Purple-bordered Gold moth, Valkmusa's emblem species. In winter, skiing is a popular way to explore the park. Be aware that some areas are inaccessible without snow and ice, and only marked trails should be used. Valkmusa National Park is a year-round destination suitable for all ages.
