The Karhulan Ilmailukerho Aviation Museum, maintained by the Karhula Flying Club, is a unique attraction in the Kymenlaakso region, dedicated to preserving Finland's aviation heritage. Founded in 1992, with a new display hall added in 1995, the museum displays a diverse collection of aircraft, including both military and civilian models. The museum's collection features approximately 15 aircraft, including a rare Harakka training glider, a MiG-21F fighter jet, and a Fouga Magister. Pride of place is given to the world's only flying Gloster Gauntlet from WWII, the last RAF fighter to have an open cockpit. Other notable aircraft include the Mikoyan MiG-21BIS, Saab 35 Draken, and Folland Gnat Mk. 1. The museum also maintains the heritage of Fighter Squadron 34, which operated at Kymi airfield during the war. Kymi airfield was built in 1942-43 to enhance the air defense of Kotka. Visitors can explore the science of flight, learn about famous aviators, and discover significant milestones in aviation history through engaging exhibits. The museum often hosts special events and exhibitions, providing a dynamic experience that changes with each visit.
