Discover more about Helsingin Kaupunginteatteri

Helsinki City Theatre, located on the shore of Eläintarhanlahti bay, is a cornerstone of Helsinki's cultural scene. The theater's story began with the merging of the Helsinki Workers' Theatre (founded in 1902) and the Helsinki National Theatre (founded in 1933), becoming the Helsinki National Workers' Theatre in 1948. This eventually evolved into the Helsinki City Theatre we know today, with the current building opening its doors in 1967. The theater boasts five stages, including the Main Stage, Small Stage, Lilla Teatern (for Swedish-language productions), Studio Pasila, and Arena Stage, offering a diverse program of domestic and foreign dramas, comedies, musicals, and children's plays. The Helsinki Dance Company, the only one of its kind in Finland connected to a professional theater, also calls it home. Each year, the theater presents over 30 productions and 800 performances, attracting around 300,000 visitors. Designed by architects Timo Penttilä and Kari Virta, the theater building itself is an architectural landmark. Beyond performances, the Helsinki City Theatre actively engages with the community through workshops, theater tours, and open rehearsals.
