    Discover more about Temppeliaukio Church

Nestled in the heart of Helsinki's Töölö neighborhood, Temppeliaukio Church, or the Church of the Rock, stands as a testament to innovative architecture and the seamless integration of nature and design. Completed in 1969 by architect brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen, this Lutheran church is hewn directly into solid bedrock, creating a unique and awe-inspiring space. Originally planned in the 1930s, the church's construction was delayed by World War II. After the war, the Suomalainen brothers won an architectural competition with their groundbreaking design that preserved the site's natural rock formations. The interior was excavated from the rock, with a copper-domed roof overhead, allowing natural light to flood the space through 180 skylights. The rough, unworked rock walls provide exceptional acoustics, making the church a sought-after concert venue. Inside, visitors can admire the blend of natural and man-made elements, including the rugged rock walls, the copper-clad dome, and the unique organ with 3,001 pipes. An ice-age crevice serves as the altarpiece, further emphasizing the church's connection to its natural surroundings. The church hosts regular services, weddings, and concerts, drawing both locals and tourists alike. Temppeliaukio Church welcomes visitors of all backgrounds to experience its serene atmosphere and architectural splendor.
