Rupakivi Rock: A Lapland Landmark

Rupakivi Rock is a striking geological formation in the heart of Oulanka National Park, Salla. Rising approximately 7 meters from the Savinajoki River, this rocky statue has become a notable point of interest for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The rock is accessible via the popular Karhunkierros Trail, about 4 km from the Savilampi parking area. Rupakivi, which translates to 'Rock Stone,' stands as a testament to the power of natural erosion. Over millennia, the Savinajoki River has sculpted this imposing structure, leaving behind a unique landmark that captures the imagination. The rock is a miniature island, complete with a tiny forest and a small tree growing atop. On its sheltered side, a small sandy beach adds to the charm, while the towering cliff bravely faces the river's current. Visitors can admire Rupakivi from a viewing platform accessible by steep stairs. Although getting close to the rock is not possible, the view from the riverbank is rewarding. The surrounding Oulanka National Park offers a diverse landscape of forests, rivers, and rugged terrain, making it a haven for outdoor activities.
