Sanginjoki Nature Reserve, located approximately 20 kilometers from Oulu city center, offers a diverse and easily accessible natural escape. This expansive area encompasses mature forests, wetlands, and the winding Sanginjoki River, providing a habitat for various plant and animal species. The reserve features over 40 kilometers of hiking trails that wind through different forest types. Visitors can explore old-growth spruce forests, lichen-covered pine heaths, and restored mires. The trails are mostly easy to navigate, making the reserve suitable for hikers of all skill levels. Several trails of varying lengths are available, including the Loppula accessible trail. Sanginjoki is also a prime location for birdwatching. The reserve is home to many old-growth forest bird species, such as the Siberian jay, red-flanked bluetail, and three-toed woodpecker. Keep an eye out for the majestic capercaillie and pygmy owl as well. The Sanginjoki River, which borders the reserve, adds to the area's scenic appeal. The river is popular for fishing, although a permit is required. The reserve's diverse landscape also includes ponds, springs and other small bodies of water. In autumn 2024, the reserve's hiking services were upgraded, offering visitors even better opportunities for planning both short and long excursions. Four campfire sites are available, two of which are accessible. The Loppula area features an accessible nature trail. Note that trails are not maintained during winter.
